These whole class reading sessions aim to develop children’s comprehension skills when reading a range of texts related to the topic of vikings. The three sessions include the extracts/ texts and presentations for the whole class reading sessions on: -How to Train Your Dragon - Cressida Cowell -Leif Erikson - Factfile (non-fiction text) -Two Terrible Vikings - Francesca Simon Each whole class reading session contains a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, prediction and summarising skills. There is also a vocabulary check immediately after each extract is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language. The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions and deeper thinking activities. The sessions are best suited for children in years 3-5, although with minor adaptations they could feasibly be used with slightly younger and older year groups. These resources are suitable for home/ remote learning.

In these engaging and comprehensive lessons, students are introduced to each of the five pillars of Islam: Shahada Salah Zakah Sawm Hajj Each lesson provides students with an in-depth understanding of the pillar, through a range of comprehension, knowledge recall, and creative activities. Children also consider their own personal spirituality, discussing important concepts such as perseverance, tolerance and respect. The lessons are tried and tested, and the nature of the colouful, step-by-step PowerPoint presentations (averaging around 17-18 slides per lesson) makes them easy for teachers and students to follow. All of the readings, worksheets, and other activities are also provided (in both Word and PDF), as well as hyperlinks to a number of video resources. In the past, I have used these lessons with children in upper Key Stage 2 (years 5 and 6). The key learning is aligned with regional expectations for RE, and also the content prescribed by most diocese regions.

Towards the end of each session, children are encouraged to reflect on their own personal spirituality, in response to deep and relevant discussion questions. This worship sessions are tried and tested, and have always been really well received in the past. The slides are visually engaging and well-presented, and the subject matter is tailored to the interests and needs of young people. If everything is kept in each session, they take around 30 minutes each to deliver, but you may choose to edit or amend some elements of the session.
